Volunteers needed for the Silent
Auction
Ok, it's time to get the ball rolling if we're going to
have another successful Silent Auction which is to be
held the same night as the Spring Awards (on May 20th).
I would like to ask everyone who would like to help in
ANY way they possibly can to a Kick Off Meeting at my
house next Thursday, 2/4 , at 7 PM (I thought I would
wait until finals were over). Since there were actually
very few people who marked "silent auction" on their
volunteer form, I'd like to open this up to everyone.
Here are some ways you can possibly help--many of you
would be able to do multiple things, for which I would
be very grateful for.
Please let me know if you'll be at
this meeting (Nancy at 503-866-0044 or
oldriver4@verizon.net ). If you won't be there, but
would like to help in some way, please let me know that,
too! Thank you in advance for your help. Working
together, we can again make this silent auction a
success! Again, this Kick Off Meeting is:
Thursday, February 4th,
7 PM
3838 NW Brookview Way,
Portland
(corner south east of Findley Elementary)

Students and Parent volunteers
needed for the Starlight Run and Shamrock Run
We have TWO opportunities to help Hamilton Events
who organized the Starlight Run that we helped with
last year. There, we helped with the food set-up for
the runners after the race and also with the coat
check booth. For each volunteer, we earned $18.
Hamilton Events was so impressed with our help that
they REQUESTED us for the Shamrock Run. Isn't that
great?!!
We will need as many students as we can to sign up
for both events--both students and parents. We need
an Adult/Student ratio of one to 5 (1:5)
Transportation will again be via the MAX. The events
are as follows:
- Shamrock Run - Sunday, March 14th at the Waterfront Park 6-10:30 AM
- Starlight Run - Saturday, June 5th at Lincoln High (where we'll stay)
5:30-9:30 PM
Please send Nancy an email OR sign
up in the band room on the bulletin board. Indicate if you'd be able to help with BOTH, or
either one. I'd like to submit our application by
January 11th to guarantee our place. They'd like at
least 10 participants but I KNOW we can do much
better than that...more people equals more $$! We
do, however, need to supply a realistic number who
will attend. They'd much rather we tell them 20 and
have 24 people show rather than tell them 30 and
only 10 show. So let's be committed and show them
our band spirit!!
Save your wrapping material and
baskets for the Silent Auction
I am trying to think WAY ahead to the Silent Auction
that will be held on May 20th. Pulling all the
donated items together to look enticing takes time
and materials. The holidays are filled with
beautifully adorned presents. Could I please ask for
your help to save some choice items that you could
donate to our Silent Auction Committee? We'll need
baskets with stuffing and cellophane, pretty ribbon
and bows...anything along those lines would be
greatly appreciated! We will send out an email when
the auction committee is ready to start packaging up
the goodies. Thank you for your help to save us some
$.
Turn your old cell phones and
printer cartridges into cash for SAMBA
Many of us have old cell phones that are collecting
dust. Also with the holidays upon us, many will
receive new phones, leaving yet another old phone.
What WILL you do with them? Let's put them to good
use by recycling them and giving the band some
needed funds!! We will hold a recycling event in
2010. Details will follow. The site will recycle not
only old cell phones, but also ink cartridges, so
please save those too!!
SAMBA Goes National! -
The interview with NPR correspondent Tom
Goldman aired on All Things Considered on Friday,
November 13. This was a very exciting project for all of
our students and staff to be involved with. You can read
